چکیده

Pneumocystis is a major cause of pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals, including those with AIDS and those receiving immunosuppressive therapy. During the early stage of the AIDS epidemic, there were approximately 20,000 cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) per year. The incidence of PcP started to decline when prophylaxis was recommended in 1989 for HIV-infected patients with a CD4+ cell count less than 200/μL.1,2 A further decline in the incidence of PcP occurred around 1996 when highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) became widely used. At present, PcP occurs mainly as an AIDS-associated illness in patients who do not know that they are HIVpositive or who are not compliant with HAART Pneumocystis Pneumonia Jang-Jih Lu,1,2 Chao-Hung Lee3*

Molecular detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii using polymerase chain reaction in immunocompromised patients with pulmonary disorders in northeast of Iran

Background and Purpose: Pneumocystis pneumonia, caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii, is a fatal disease threatening patients with AIDS or immunosuppression. Assessment of colonization in these patients is of great significance, since it can lead to severe pulmonary disorders. Absolute lymphocyte count as a predictor of Pneumocystis pneumonia in patients previously unknown to have HIV

This is a retrospective review of patients admitted to an inner city community hospital with community-acquired pneumonia who were ultimately diagnosed with AIDS and Pneumocystis. Absolute lymphocyte count in our hospital is available immediately. In contrast, it can take 48 hours or longer to obtain more specific CD-4 counts and AIDS enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) serology. The asso...

Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum, Pneumopericardium, and Pneumothorax with Respiratory Failure in a Patient with AIDS and Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia

Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in up to 35% of patients with Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia. However, spontaneous pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium are uncommon complications in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus, with no reported incidence rates, even among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and P. jirovecii pneumonia. We report a case of spontane...

Endobronchial Pneumocystis carinii infection in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

We report a case of endobronchial Pneumocystis carinii infection in a patient who most likely had the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although many unusual manifestations of Pneumocystis pneumonia have been reported in patients with AIDS, this is the first case of P carinii presenting as an endobronchial mass.

Roentgenographic patterns of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in 104 patients with AIDS.

We reviewed the initial and follow-up chest roentgenograms (CXR) of 104 patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) diagnosed between 1981 and 1985 in order to determine the relative frequencies of its various roentgenographic patterns. Although a diffuse bilateral interstitial infiltrate is most common, it was concluded that unusual and...
